When parents of preschool age children divorce

As with all children, preschool-aged kids have special needs that are different from babies and older children. If you're a soon-to-be divorced parent with a preschool-aged child, there are several things you'll want to consider while creating your parenting plan.

Here's what you'll want to keep in mind:

  • Preschool-aged children require predictability and consistency in their parenting plans. The more predictable their schedules are, the easier time they'll have with adjusting to the routine of visiting and/or going back and forth from one parent's house to the other.
  • This age of child will become attached to his or her regular caregivers. As such, you'll want you to ensure that your child gets to spend as much time as possible with both parents.
  • Preschoolers don't cope as well as older children do with switching back and forth between homes. It's normal for your child to show signs of being upset when transitioning from one home to the other, but he or she should calm down after getting settled.
  • Preschool-aged kids benefit greatly from plenty of time with other children around their age ranges.
  • Make sure your parenting plan establishes a conflict resolution strategy to ensure that you and the other parent do not engage in angry arguments in front of your young children.

These are just a few of the most important things that will help parents of preschool-aged kids set up the most effective parenting strategy that supports the needs of their young ones. By paying attention to specific details required by your young child like this, you can prevent many parenting conflicts while offering your child the best upbringing environment possible.
